The Oscars Red Carpet Fashion Recap

I’m back with my annual Oscars Red Carpet fashion picks and pans.  The 88th Annual Academy Awards were full of fashion high points…and….definitely some low points.  These are just my humble opinions and I realize my idea of fashion may not coincide with everyone’s .  I am just taking this moment to tell you what I liked.  I will be taking a few moments to poke some fun at what I didn’t like too.

Let’s start with the good stuff…

Red Carpet Picks

My pick of the night is actually shared between two different ladies because I just could not decide between the two who pulled it off the best.

Charlize Theron in custom Dior…again….and we love it….again.

charlize-theron-oscars-red-carpet-2016

Head to toe chic.  I wonder whether a choker would have worked on this look.  The long pendant works well but I wonder if a choker would have worked better…not sure.  I love that they went minimal and didn’t over stack this gown with jewelry.  Clean, simple, elegant and so very chic.  Brava!!

A little look inside the Dior workroom (Instagram) on this one.  It was a custom order folks.  It’s pays to be a couture house’s muse.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé

ate-blanchett-2016-oscars-academy-awards-in Armani

Stunning!!!  From the color to the delicate floral embellishment I adored this look.  Her Tiffany jewelry brought it to another level.  Everything just sings for me on this one.  All the girly princess pressure points in my system sang to this Ave Maria of a gown.

Those were my two favorite looks of the evening but there were a number of  looks that made me nod my head in approval to the wearer and stylist.

Alicia Virkander in custom Louis Vuitton

Academy-Awards-Oscars-alicia-vinkander_in Louis Vuitton

Glorious in whipped butter yellow!!  All you bakers out there know the color I reference.  When was the last time we saw yellow rock the red carpet?   I’m thinking never!  Michelle Williams did orange in Vera Wang beautifully one year but I’m not sure this shade of yellow has made an appearance lately.  Again minimal jewelry, soft hair and softer makeup palette brings forth a win on this one.  And congrats to Ms. Virkender on her Oscar win and….managing to bring Michael Fassbender as her date!  Cuuuuuuute.

Ms. Virkander also rocked a LV for the after parties too…

LV VF party

Giuliana Rancic in George Chakra

-giuliana-dress-oscars-in George Chakra

I loved the clean elegant lines of this gown and the party that was the back.  Nice.  Giuliana still needs a few cheeseburgers though to fill out those arms.

Olivia Munn in Stella McCartney

Academy-Awards-Oscars-olivia-munn_in Stella McCartney

Loved this bold deep orange/red on her.  I also loved the bold clean lines of this design and the strong clean jewelry she ( or her stylist) paired with it.  Nice!

Honerable Mention

First off  “Cutest reveal of a baby bump” has to go to Emily Blunt in Prada

2016-oscars-academy-awards-emily-blunt in Prada

I was not on social media for the days leading up to the Oscars so I missed the announcement that she was expecting.  I took one look at her empire waist gown and said to my daughter “Is Emily Blunt preggers?”  Guess I should have read the news feed before the event.  She glowed in this and I liked it.

Next up is “Person most likely to feel a draft the WHOLE evening”.  This goes to  Rachel McAdams in August Getty.

2016-oscars-academy-awards-rachel-mcadams in August Getty Atelier

Why the “feel the draft” comment?  This is why….

BBq7TW8

Ohhhhh my.  There had to have been some industrial tapping going on when she got dressed.  There was simply no room for “gap issues” in that gown.  Tape all the way.  Can’t imagine what it was like to undress from that one.  Ouuuuuuch.  She looked gorgeous in it though.  I wonder how many times people stepped on the train.

“Best revenge on a cheating ex-husband” has to go to Jennifer Garner in Atelier Versace

jennifer-garner-oscars-red-carpet-2016 in Versace

She looked regal and elegant in this all black power house of a gown.  Take that one to the nanny Ben.  Seriously.

“Best way to support a friend” goes to Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell

oscars-academy-awards-lady-gaga in Brandon Maxwell

The designer is a friend of hers and he is trying to make his way in this shark tank of a fashion industry.  Lady Gaga showed his work to perfection on the red carpet.  She also performed a powerful rendition of her best song nomination from a documentary showcasing the alarming epidemic of college campus rape.  Nicely done my Lady.

“The woman who most embodied a gladiator” award goes to Kerry Washington in Atelier Versace

oscars-academy-awards-kerry-washington in Atelier Versace

The leather breastplate top just didn’t do it for me.  It was a strong bold look for sure…just wasn’t feeling it.  I kept thinking…”she needs the helmet thing with the brush broom on top..and a sword”

Red Carpet Pans

My pans for the evening were few actually.  First up has to be Sandy Powell in…well..don’t know the designer but the look sadly came across as a catastrophic ode to David Bowie.  The woman is an amazing costume designer (hello!! she has multiple Oscars to prove it) but her style fell very short on the red carpet last night.  Poor woman…E! Online kept calling her Tilda Swinton during their red carpet segment.  I nearly made myself hoarse screaming at the TV “ It’s NOT Tilda Swinton…it’s Sandy Powel!!”  Get it together E! !!

Sandy Powell in

Olivia Wilde in Valentino

Olivia-Wilde-Oscars-2016-Academy-Awards in Valentino

Ummmmm. no!  I am all for architectural design in clothing but this just felt wrong to me.  WAY too many pleats for my taste.  Olivia Wilde is an amazingly beautiful woman.  This fashion on her did not showcase that at all.  Yes, she sure has the body to wear it but this one just left me…well….de pleated LOL!

It didn’t work any better on the Spring 2016 Couture runway either

2016 Spring Couture Valentino

Mara Rooney in Givenchy

rooney-mara-oscars-red-carpet-2016

Oh I know I will get hate mail for this one.  I can hear the comments now…”But Rebecca…it’s Givenchy!!”  The gown is stunning…just not on this albino skinned actress.  I have to admit, part of my negative review of this look had to do with Mara Rooney and her none too happy face every time the camera landed on her.  It came across as petulance.  I would love to see the amazing Ms. Rooney in some kind of color not this gothic pasty white/cream.  She just blended into the background here.

Lastly, and it pains me to do this….I give you Kate Winslet in Ralph Lauren

-Academy-Awards-Oscars-kate-winslet in Ralph Lauren

My first thought…honest to God…was, who put Kate in a hefty bag?  Was that sequins, metallic sheen or just plain plastic sheeting?  Have no idea.  Normally she nocks it out of the park.  This year, she stayed in the park and was rummaging around in the garbage cans.  Sadly Kate, not the king of the world with this one.  It was honestly adorable though that you walked in with Leo DiCaprio à la Titanic from years ago.  Very cute.

Lastly we have Heidi Klum in Marchesa

oscars-academy-awards-heidi-klum in Marchesa

Ok, the color is not bad but please, oh please lose the puff sleeve!! And the Pom-Pom fleurettes need to go…like right now.  This dress has garden party gone amuck all over it.  No disrespect to the talented ladies of Marchesa but…was Heidi looking for funding from Harvey Weinstein and was just sucking up by buying the last dress on the rack from his wife?  Ouch Rebecca!

After Party

As an added item for this years tome on Oscar night fashions, I would like to add a few snaps on who ruled at the after parties.  Vanity Fair had quite a few winners as well as Elton John’s big party.

Taylor Swift in Alexandre Vauthier

Taylor-Swift-Vanity-Fair-Oscar-Party in Alexandre Vauthier

Rachel McAdams in Naeem Khan

Rachel-McAdams-Vanity-Fair-Oscar-Party-Oscars-2016 in Naeem Khan

Maggie Grace in Galia Lahav

maggie-grace-at-24th-annual-elton-john-aids-foundation-s-oscar-viewing-party-in-west-hollywood_1

And…how cute is this couple?!!  Gwen Stefani in Yanina and Blake Shelton.  His expression is priceless.  It says “ I’m just happy to be here y’all”.  I love how she is decked out sexy gorgeous and he looks like he’s going to a neighborhood association meeting.

Oscar After Party

And that’s a wrap for this years award season fashion reviews.

Poppy Parker Live from the Oscars Red Carpet!

Every time the Oscars roll around, I feel compelled to do some kind of red carpet or Oscar themed shoot.  I have done Barbie getting dressed in her closet.  I’ve done Barbie on her way to presenting the Oscar.  I’ve done Barbie on the red carpet.  I have yet to do any Integrity Toys, Inc products for the Oscar night festivities.  Well…I’m going to fix that right now!  Poppy Parker is going to the Oscars!

Add, Mix and Stir!!

©2016 Integrity Toys, Inc.

Integrity Toys and their  WClub just announced the first release of 2016.  It’s a capsule collection entitled “In The Mix” and it will certainly stir many collectors’ imaginations and open quite a few wallets and/or break bank accounts.  According to IT’s marketing director, Alain Trembley, this Color Infusion offering was inspired by today’s music industry.  It’s a smart, sexy street style of a capsule collection with lots of opportunities to mix and match within this or other collections.

Two things….two….pink jacket and thigh high black leather boots.  Enough said.

©2016 Integrity Toys, Inc.

For those of you not familiar with the Color Infusion line of dolls from Integrity Toys, they are 1/6 scale 12.5 inch fashion dolls.  They differ from FR2, Nu.Face and Poppy in that their body type has different proportions and the foot size is larger.  I am clarifying this because some of the clothing can be used on other 1/6 body types and some cannot.  Their shoes are generally too big for other 1/6 dolls.

WHERE TO BUY: List of Integrity Toys dealers is here.  WClub members had this information a full day ahead of this posting so if you are at all interested, I suggest you contact a dealer sooner rather than later.  These items will be hot sellers.

Honestly, this collection has floored me.  I am  not and have not been a Color Infusion collector.  I have seen this product line since it’s inception and it never really appealed to me….until now.  It feels like they have taken this product line and elevated it about 5 levels.  This is the hip urban street style that the Nu.Face line used to have.  This is, I feel,  the sassy fashion profile that collectors had been wanting to see but had not seen lately from Integrity.  Thank you for listening I.T.!!!  For the first time ever, I am contemplating dipping a toe in Color Infusion products.  Vaughn Sawyer led the design team on this one.  Mr. Sawyer, I tip my hat  to you.

Love in Praga

This past year at The National Barbie Doll Collector Convention, the talented Magia2000 team of Mario Paglino and Gianni Grossi presented a collection that was very close to their hearts.  They showcased a OOAK collection centered on the theme of love.  A fitting theme as they announced at this event that they would be tying the knot themselves later that year.   How special is that?!!  There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after that announcement.  With all of the love going on in that room, many collectors walked away with the right to purchase some of this stunningly beautiful collection.  They used a new system of drawing numbers and when your number was drawn you could choose from what was left or decline to purchase.  The people who had their numbers chosen early walked away with their first choice of the options.  I was lucky enough to have my number chosen while one of my favorites was still up for purchase.  Her name is “Love in Praga” which I understand to mean Love in Prague.  I am honored and so very pleased to have this one of a kind creation in my collection and was so happy to participate in this celebration of love at the NBDCC in 2015.

The Power of Pink!!

Actually, I wanted to title this blog post “The power of pink, a new frock and a little bit of sunshine” , but it would have been too long.   When you live in the Pacific Northwest and it’s the dead of winter ( which means rain people…lots and lots of rain), if one ray of sunshine peaks out, you are grabbing your camera and saying “What can I take a photo of!!”  Or maybe…that’s just me.   Yes I am seeing someone about my random photo tendencies when in the presence of intermittent sunshine LOL!

©2016 Inside The Fashion Doll Studio "The Power of Pink"

So, recently I took ownership of this adorable little dress from Hilda of Bellissima Couture.  To me this dress just makes me happy.  It’s pink yumminess with a hat.  Also, it gave me a chance to use a new model in the studio..Ms. IT Airways Poppy Parker.  She came with a pair of hands with white gloves ( Thank you David!!) so I knew I had to use them in a photo.  I know by reading the WClub boards that a number of people were less than pleased with how the hair came out for their Poppy’s.  Mine was not the best when she arrived but a very thoughtful and gifted group of souls on the WClub talked some of us through what they did to fix their Poppy’s hair.  It worked like a dream on mine.  If you are a WClub member and want to see the tutorial, head over to the WClub forum and look under IT Airways Poppy.  My “thanks” to the contributors!

She is a young Anna Wintour here.  The hat did not come with the dress.  It is a floral scrapbooking embellishment.  The pink pearl necklace is one I made.

Back to Basics

What do I mean by that?  Good question.  With all the negativity going on right now surrounding this new articulated silkstone body from Mattel and the general feeling that they are not listening to their adult collector community, I took a moment to refocus.   I was getting too wrapped up in the negativity of the bad front end user interface of the Barbie Collection website and the lack of  information and general feel of apathy coming from Mattel.  I needed to come back to why I like to collect…”Why am I doing this?”.   I needed to go look at my collection and start falling in love again.  It didn’t take long.  I went into the studio and took some photos and started rediscovering why I love to collect fashion dolls.  It’s not about Mattel and what they do and don’t do.  It’s not about Integrity Toys either.  They do play a part because it is their products that fuel a passion but it’s not why I collect.

The love lies in what is done with these fashion models.  It’s the creativity and support of the community that truly fuels and sustains the love of this hobby.  With so much hurt and negativity going on right now, I think it’s time to pull back and refocus on my collection and what I enjoy most about it.  I am not one to be driven by the acquisition of a thing nor am I what some consider a completest.  Contrary to some people’s believe, I do not own every Silkstone Barbie ever made ( although I would not turn down the opportunity to LOL!).  What I strive to do is have a collection of things that I truly enjoy.  So…that is what I am going to try do do with the blog this year.  Focus on enjoying the collection I have and not get tied up in where Mattel is going with their product line or not going with their website.  It’s time to enjoy the collection I have.  And I hope to share that enjoyment with you all through the photos I produce.

This gorgeous lady came to me at this past year’s  Barbie Collector convention in Virginia.  She is a Mannequin Maven.  Mannequin Maven’s are the collaborative team of the very talented Maryann Roy and Hilda Westervelt.  I love it when these two gifted artists get together and create!  They never disappoint.  Hilda and Maryann have collaborated for various charity donations for GAW, Kenvention, NBDCC and Rome Fashion Doll Convention.

The poodle…well…the poodle is a whole other story.  That little guy came to me through a new friend made at Barbie convention and it quickly became my travel companion and sort of travel meme through the entire trip.  For those in the “poodle club” …and you know who you are…it was time to bring the poodle out for a real photo shoot.  We really need to give this little guy a name before next convention.

Winking smile

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

I picked up this glorious gown at the last IT convention and have been waiting for the right lady to wear it.  It is a power house of a gown so who better than “Power House Ayumi” to wear it.

Soda Shop Barbie

Bill Greening has given the BFC his next installment in the Willows, WI line that is continuing to pay homage to Midwest Americana nostalgia.  This one is only available to BFC members, and a nice perk of membership this year in my opinion.  How can you not find this one adorable?!!  That face!!  Awwwww….makes me want to pull up an upholstered chrome stool and slurp down a milkshake.  Nostalgia isn’t cheap though folks…she comes with a hefty price tag of $75.  You do get some adorable little extras though.   And, it’s pink and there is a poodle involved…enough said, I’m buyin’.   Excellent work Mr. Greening!!  One question though, where are the saddle shoes?!  Guess they really wouldn’t have gone with the look.

2016 Silkstone News!!!

Well, well, well.  Thanks to Rogier and Dutch Barbie World’s super sleuthing, we have some new info on the 2016 articulated Silkstone line.   Many collectors have known for a while that there would be a Trench Coat silkstone and a Glam Dress silkie but no images.  Today that changed when these images were posted on a European sales site.  I was hoping for some released info ahead of Toy Fair this week and it looks like the European market has obliged.

**Note, these images are prototype only and no indication of actual product**

Disclaimer out of the way, they look like valid promo shots to me so I will share them.  Keep in mind that Mattel has not “officially” released information on these but then they have been slow as molasses to release any information so…make up your own minds.

EEEEEEEEEE!  In a puddle with pure delight right now.  A couple of weeks back, I was chatting with my friend and fellow blogger,  Rogier over at Dutch Barbie World, and we were both discussing an outfit we had seen on Instagram and how much we liked it and how we were hoping it would be produced.  I think I might have even joked “ Wouldn’t it be perfect if this was on a Silkstone?!”

Anywhoo…and it appears to be coming true!!!  Thank you Robert Best!!!  Best of all people…this girl has some jewelry!!!!

Articulated Silkstone Now Available to Order

But she won’t be shipping until March 1st folks.  If you want her sooner, look to the dealers, they appear to be getting them first.  I like this idea of giving the dealers first dibs on shipment.  It makes sense to me and it helps support those dealers that have been loyally selling Mattel’s collector products for all these years.  I called my trusty dealer Barb of Windy City Dolls the moment I saw these ladies showing up on Ebay ( not happy that this is where the first ones showed up but not surprised either).  She sent one over as soon as they arrived at her shop.

So…what do I think?  I think the face on this first Silkstone of 2016 is a winner.  It is one of the best facial screenings I have seen in a while from the BFMC.  Very soft, and pretty.  The black dress is basic.  The material is nice and of a good weight…but basic.  The boots are…basic.  They are plastic people and almost impossible to get off unless you use the hot water trick **see below.   No jewelry, purse with this one nor undergarments..yep that’s right…Barbie is going full commando.

The bigger question I think is what do I think of the body of this doll.  First and foremost, the dimensions are NOT the same as previous BFMC Silkstone bodies.  The bust is most definitely smaller.  Clothing does not fit exactly the same which surprises me as I believe Mr. Best said that the body was going to be the same proportions in the video announcing the articulated bodies.   I am not saying the body is bad…just different dimensions and for us redressers, that will be an issue.  The material feels weighty and solid which is nice and the joints appear to be solid and stay where you position them.  It is basically ok…but not great.  Here is why:  1) The articulation on the joints is minimal except for the legs.  This girl can do the splits if she wants but she cant rotate her hand enough to fully bend it one way or the other…it only goes a little bit one way or the other.  She can just barely put her hands on her hips.  Compare the functionality with Integrity Toys dolls and you will find that IT bodies are loads ahead as far as flexibility.  The new Silkstone body can however, do the splits whereas IT dolls cannot.  Not sure how that is something I will utilize unless I get the letch to do Gymnast Barbie, or Pole Dancing Barbie or perhaps contortionist Barbie.  You never know…it could happen.  I am hopeful that the next iterations of this body will beef up the bust size and include some additional rotation in the joints.  My other big concern with these new bodies are the rough edges and seams that show.  The knee joint on the one I received had a big ugly rough edge at the seam right above the knew joint.  Some may argue that you will hardly ever see that…maybe but in the dress she came in, it was VERY evident.  It’s not worthy of sending back, it’s just sloppy work on the part of the factory.  Am I expected now to file down the seams of Silkstone dolls that I receive?

On the very positive side however, the doll is only $40.  That is an extremely low price point for a Silkstone Barbie doll.  So…messy seams and all, this doll photographs beautifully.  I admit, I had to pin the gown on her so it fit more securing up top.  It was made to be worn by the older body.  She does look good though and I guess each collector will have to decide for themselves if she is a good fit for their collection.  I am keeping mine for the present and still hopeful for the year ahead for the BFMC.  I think it will be a very much paired down year but time will just have to tell on that one.

Oh..and as an added not to my loyal readers…After filing multiple DCMA claims with various accounts on Pinterest and Instagram all of which were cutting the watermark off my photos and passing them off as their own, I will have to start putting even larger and more intrusive watermarks on my photos.  Not my choice people but there you have it.  Sometimes…I just don’t understand some people.

**Hot Water Boot Trick**  To help get those pesky black boots off, I heated up a cup of water to almost boiling then stuck the legs and boots in for about 30-35 seconds.  Using a towel because they will be hot, boots should slid right off.  If not, put the legs with boots back in the water for a bit more.

Power House Ayumi

I just received the first of three of the 2015 revamped NuFace line that I ordered.  All I can say is she is stunning!  The facial screening is absolutely beautiful in my opinion.

The shoe strings were too short for me to tie into a bow so I ended up knotting them in the back and tucking the ends into the shoes.  Not a bad fix.  It will be a pain to untie and redress though.  The jewelry is simple but sturdy and appropriate given the very clean chic lines of the outfit.  Love the red, red lips and simple and elegant facial screening.  The hair was really good when I deboxed  but I wanted the bangs to lie closer to the head so I did end up pinning the end of the swoop of her bangs so It would lay closer to the head.   Looking forward to redressing this beauty.

My reaction?…

tumblr_lkjxss9eTr1qba78m

Oh yes again!!!  My poor, poor wallet is toast but Stefan and I are happy.  How amazing is this Imogen?!  Love the smoky eye and beautiful slightly tan Hungarian skin stone.  It’s so edgy chic!!  Perfect for the newly revamped and emerging Nu.Face line.

It looks like the Nu.Face team is going back to Balmain for inspiration here and can I just say…good call on NOT doing the ruffled pants.  Looks like there may be some Alexander MCQueen going on as well with all the skulls.

2016 Inspirations-The Year Ahead

So…I am sitting here this morning with my morning cup of java ( hating the fact that its non fat creamer because I am doing that “lets do a diet” to start the year off right thing)  and getting inspiration for the year of blogging ahead.  I finally have some free time ahead of me and really want to devote more time to this blog that I love and the collection that is such a hobby of joy for me to photograph and talk about.  As I was sinking my teeth into the first few screens of Pinterest and Instagram images for the morning,  I stumbled upon a number of images that just took flight in my head and had me thinking about dioramas and lots of yummy content for the blog.  I just have to share.

I don’t know about you guys but I love illustrations.  I particularly enjoy fashion illustrations which is why I have a number of limited prints by Robert Best.   If you follow the Barbie Instagram account, you might have already enjoyed this woman’s work.  I have to admit, I’m a newbie to her lovely illustrations but I am already a huge fan.  Her name is Kerrie Hess

Aren’t these scrumptious!!!  Now…to figure out how to percolate some of these illustrations and ideas into background and diorama ideas for our 1/6 ladies.  Oh yes, Rebecca is inspired now.

2016 BFMC Articulated Silkstone Sneaked

This is not an official sneak from Mattel but it is all over the internet and social media so I am going to share it here.  This was first reported by my very fine friend and fellow blogger Rogier of Dutch Barbie World.  Zlatan Zukanovic posted some amazing and beautiful photos on his Instagram account a few days ago of what appear to be the first articulated Silkstone.  Her face is adorable!!

©2016 Zlatan Zukanovic

©2016 Zlatan Zukanovic

©2016 Zlatan Zukanovic

Gorgeous right?!!  Then…this afternoon…guess what shows up on Ebay!

BDKN07

BDKN07A

Original listing is here.  Not a word from Mattel, not a sneak, not a whisper.  I find this very interesting and I also question the sales hype of the BFC where they tout that the club is “a passionate collecting community with unparalleled access to the world of Barbie”.  Yes, the collecting community is unparalleled in this arena but I am no longer sure how much of that is due to Mattel.  It seems that more and more we are finding and receiving information from sources other than Mattel.  Perhaps this is just the way things go with social media being the way it is or…perhaps this is just a marketing team that doesn’t really seem to know what they are doing.  Either way, it looks like reaching out and watching things like Instagram, Ebay and Facebook are the way to get information going forward.  Love the photos that Zlatan did so it is not a chore to look at his lovely photos whenever he posts.  Bonus!

When this beauty is available….I’m buying!!  Smile

2016 BFC Membership Renewal Open to Current Members…

…and I am honestly conflicted about it.  I went ahead and purchased a membership ( and had difficulties doing it see story below) but I am conflicted as to whether this is something I would really recommend to a new or even seasoned collector at this point.

©2016 Mattel, Inc.

©2016 Mattel, Inc.

Here is what I am liking about this years club.

1) AA Silkstone in a blue suit looks scrumptious!!  She will be a BFC exclusive so only available to the club.  This may be worth the $25 alone and is perhaps the main reason I signed back up this year.  Mr. Best, you get my vote…your tech department does not.

2)  Soda Shop Barbie ( part of the Willows, WI  line) is ADORABLE.  Love the poodle skirt and love where Bill Greening has taken and seems to be taking this line.  Well done Mr. Greening.

3) The Free gift is a chair!  And it seems to be the same pattern as the gilt chairs in the dioramas we all love so much from BFMC.  But…it’s black and not gold or gilt.  Hmmmmm… see more on this below.

Here is what I am not liking about this years club:

1) The chair is black and not gilt or gold.  I mean we can spray paint…no problem … but there is some work involved with that one.  You need to make sure it’s the right gold…and does that white seat cover come off?  Is it cloth or is it plastic?  It’s totally doable…just wish they had sprung the extra buck and had them sprayed gold is all.  I was kind of primed for the gold based on what was said in the promotional video about the articulated silkstone’s.  But…free is free so guess I really can’t complain.  Will take it and say “Thank you!”

2) The free gift doesn’t come until March?  Why the three month delay?  Yes, I say three months because I suspect this puppy won’t be mailed until late March.  Oh and read the fine print people…in order to get said chair, you need to have signed up by 03/31/16.

3) NOT liking the troubles I experienced on the “improved” website.  I had to sign in multiple times to get my account to recognize me as a BFC member and therefore allowed to purchase a membership today.  Once that hurdle was jumped,  I experienced the “waiting room” and once I made it out of the waiting room and had the item in my cart, I attempted to actually pay for my membership.  Here is what I got

BFC 2016 2

What!!  My response to the screen was “ You have got to be kidding me!  This was supposed to be the “improved system”.  Do you want my business and money or not Mattel?!!

After about 4 minutes, I went back in and was able  to re-enter all my payment info and successfully complete my transaction but for 4 minutes I contemplated whether or not it was worth it.  This BC website is seriously affecting my love of Barbie and my collecting mojo.  I am just not feeling the love from Mattel when stuff like this happens and the more it happens, it makes me question why I am giving my money to them.  I hate to say it but there it is.  Just expressing my concern and sadness.    Oh and the graphic you see above…the nice one with the pictures and explanation of the club…it’s only visible if you sign out of your membership account and are looking at the BC site as a non -member.  What?!!  So members were not able to actually see the free gift chair on the product page when they paid for their membership but people who are thinking about signing up for the first time can see it?  Can someone please, please explain this one to me?!!

So…here I am….conflicted because I am in essence advertising the Barbie Fan Club and including links in this blog post for people if they are interested and yet…I am really disappointed at how the roll out of this club has played out.  Is this a harbinger for tough times ahead?  Will I continually have problems purchasing?  Will I have to log in and out of the website to see content that I am interested in?  Will I ever be able to search the BC website and find what I am looking for?  I remain hopeful but guarded.  Mattel, are you hearing any of this?

I guess what I will leave potential buyers with is a big fat CAVEAT EMPTOR .

Caveat Emptor – let the buyer beware

If you are a current BFC member, you can sign up for the club now.  If you are a new member, you can start signing up a week from now on 1/19/2016.

2016 Golden Globes: Pass the Ketchup and the Mustard

Weird title right?  Let me explain..  While there were many colors on the red carpet last night, I was surprised at the number of ketchup reds ( almost orange ) and mustard yellows.  Some of my favorite looks of the evening fell into these two favorite American condiment colors so I decided to go with it in the title.  It was quirky and fun.

Pass the ketchup please!:

Jennifer Lawrence in a fabulous Dior with a stunning diamond choker.  Loved the cutouts in this gown.  One of my favorite looks of the night.

jennifer-lawrence in Dior From Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Amy Adams in Versace.  Loved the detailing around the waist and down the side.

amy-adam-in Versace from Eonline

Emmy Rossum in Armani Prive.  Elegant and accessorized to perfection.

Ketchup has expired!! :

Natalie Dormer in J. Mendel.  Ummmmm… time to lose the oxen like yoke around the throat.  Wrong, just plain wrong.

natalie-dormer_in J Mendel from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

A little Mustard goes a long way:

Jennifer Lopez in Giambattista Valli.  This was the only mustard I was satisfied with last night.  Ms. Lopez rocked this one.  Let’s face it folks, not everyone can wear this color and you need a certain amount of attitude to do it.  She can and did it.

And…extra snaps to Ms. Lopez as she managed to make this dress look WAY better than it did on the runway for 2015 Fall Couture.2015 Fall Couture Giambattista Valli

Too much mustard!!!

America Ferrera in Jenny Packham. First of all, if the sales lady said this color looked good on you Ferrera…she was on commission.  Secondly, if you wanted to pull off matronly, this cut and style nailed it.  Not sure that was what she was going for.

america-ferrera in Jenny Packham from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Lola Kirke in Marchesa. Does Grecian draping ever work in mustard yellow?  I’m not sure it does. I love Lola Kirke and I adore the show Mozart in the Jungle ( my favorite new show and so happy they won last night!!!) but this color and styling fell short on her.  Also, the shoes with pearl ankle straps does NOT belong in this picture. lola-kirke in Monique Lhuillier from eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Leaving the condiments behind, lets talk about the sequin love affair going on at last nights Golden Globes.

Brie Larson in Calvin Klein.   Congrats to Ms. Larson on her win for best actress last night.  She was Miss Golden Globe embodied in this gown.  If I had abs like her, I would want to show them off in a dress like this too.  I loved that she kept the hair and jewelry to a minimum.  The dress is bling enough..she didn’t need anything more.

Portia Doubleday in Naeem Khan.  Forget having to go to the disco, this lady brought the disco ball with her…in fact…she wore it to the party.  The cut was ok on this one but the overall shiny ( as in…can be seen from space) effect of the gown turned me off.

596862121JF00036_73rd_Annua

Kate Bosworth in Dolce and Gabbanna.  I like pink…but pink sequins?…to this extent?…not so much.  There is just way too much going on with this dress.  And let’s just state the obvious here people, this woman NEEDS a cheeseburger.

Kate-Bosworth-in Dolce and Gabbana from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Julianne Moore in Tom Ford.  Can sequins look matronly?  Apparently Tom Ford can make that happen.  Was not feeling this look at all.

julianne-moore_in Tom Ford from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Bryce Dylan Howard in Jenny Packham.  And….apparently Jenny Packham can make sequins look matronly too!!  Tom, meet Jenny….Jenny, meet Tom.  Bryce is not 50 but she is kind of channeling it here.

bryce-dallas-howard-in Jenny Packham from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Regina King in Krikor Jabotain.  I give you “Panic at the Disco”!!  They may be a band but this picture embodies that phrase.  What on earth?!!  Is she channeling a super hero with the cape?  To the designer:  Did you feel the cape would somehow elevate this sequined gone amuck sheath?  To the stylist: What did Regina ever do to you to have you do this to her?  To Regina:  Did you at least get to feel like a superhero in this getup?  In the indomitable words of one of my mentors…Edna Mode…”NO CAPES!”

regina-king_in Krikor Jabotian from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

While sequins and plunging necklines were prevalent on the red carpet last night, The remainder of my picks and pans fell into the more understated category.  For example

When YSL works…

Saorise Ronan in Yves Saint Laurent Couture. Stunning on her!  She looked so elegant and regal compared to the disco walking down the carpet.  I loved that the hair, makeup and jewelry were very simple and elegant as well.  Nice work stylist!!

saoirse-ronan in YSL Couture from Vogue

source: www.vogue.com

When YSL doesn’t work….

Jane Fonda in Yves Saint Laurent .  And the cape/founce/16th century ruff/ ode to Mexican tile roofing around her neck was a good idea??  I believe the queens bed skirt that Helena Bonham Carter usually wears to awards shows was repurposed for this ensemble last night.  I refer to a comment made earlier…”NO CAPES!”Jane Fonda in YSL from Huffington Post

source: www.eonline.com

Jada Pinkett Smith in Versace.  LOVED this look on her from head to toe.  Gorgeous!

jada-pinkett-smith in Versaace from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Laverne Cox in Elizabeth Kennedy.  New Designer Alert!!!  Elizabeth Kennedy folks.  She had two very strong looks walking the red carpet last night.  We will be seeing this woman’s work again on the red carpet I am sure.

laverne-cox-in Elizabeth Kennedy from Vogue

source: www.eonline.com

Lady Gaga in Versace.  Well hello Ms. Monroe!!  Didn’t think the hips needed to be exaggerated that much but a small negative in the overall beauty of this look.  Beautifully styled and worn by the talented Ms. Gaga.

lady-gaga_in Versace from Eonline

source: www.eonline.com

Lily James in Marchesa.  A lovely ode to a Grecian urn and another example of how less is definitely more sometimes.  The stylist showed restraint and the overall look is better for it .

Can’t wait to see what the rest of awards season with bring down the carpet.  Winking smile

While the doll loves the party, I am loving the entire giftset!!  When I first saw this offering from the WClub, my thought was “Now THAT is a gift set!!!”  If they wanted to leave the WClub members happy after a year of fairly large product delivery delays, this will do it.  Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for this one.  I adore that this is a raven haired Elyse ( even though we received another brunette Elyse offering at convention but poor girl suffers from hydrocephalic hairstyle **see previous blog post**so there you have it).  I love the makeup and hair and the gown, while still a little too close to black for me, is gorgeous.  I am really loving the jewelry in this offering as well.

WClub members have a generous 2 and a half weeks to decide if they want to preorder this beauty.  Deadline to order is Tuesday, January 5th, 2016 at Noon Eastern Time (New York Time).

Are WClub members excited about this offering??  Oh, I think so. Winking smile

Integrity Toys 2015 Convention “Cinematic” Part II–Convention Exclusives

Let me start out by defining “convention exclusives”.  Convention exclusives are dolls or items that are available for purchase only to convention attendees.  These are not the freebies or gifts given to attendees these are simply items that were available for purchase to convention attendees.  I am not including the Grace Kelly Eugenia in this list because she was available to WClub members.   This was the first year that Integrity Toys gave this option ( and a good one in my opinion) so we have a whole other category of “convention exclusives available to WClub”.  The groups of dolls  that fall into this category are

1) I.T. Sales room exclusives

2) Centerpiece dolls

3) Workshop dolls

4) WClub luncheon and Welcome cocktail dolls

Well hello Elizabeth Taylor!!  That was the general consensus of the inspiration for this beauty.  Perhaps one of her Butterfield 8 outfits was the clothing inspiration for this one.  That would be my guess as it has an obvious nod to a lingerie look.  Loved this look and the hairstyle on the Kyori is to die for.  The shoes on this one have a weird fit to them…as in they almost don’t fit.  As long as she is standing stationary, no problem but if you pick this one up and off the stand…look for the shoes on the floor.  Other than that, this ones fabulousElizabeth Taylor in Cat on a hot tin Roof

I am not sure of the “cinematic” tie in on this one other than it looks like something a current starlet would wear to a movie premier.  The shoes and accessories are to die for.  That purse!! This is a perfect look for the NuFace line.  Edgy, modern and chic.  Don’t know if I will be keeping the doll but I certainly have plans for the fashion and accessories.

 Centerpiece Dolls:

The convention has 2 evening meal events and one luncheon event plus an extra WClub luncheon if you purchase a ticket.  For each of these meal events there is a centerpiece doll.  Typically 5-7 people get the opportunity to purchase a centerpiece doll.  They are highly collectible because their issue numbers are very low.  Here are the centerpiece dolls for this year

Some were thinking ( and I would include myself in this group) this did not have the “Wow” factor that many have come to expect from centerpiece dolls of the past.  I did not get a clear “cinematic” vibe from this one.  It was the first event centerpiece too so as far as pacing of the events, it gave off a ho hum feel.  You want to start the first event off with a bang…you know…get people excited about the convention.  This one didn’t do it in my opinion.  It made me feel like Chanel fashion club luncheon.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Chanel and I adored this fashion and doll…just not as a centerpiece.  I did purchase this one as my number was selected.  I am not sure if she is a keeper for me though.

Is it Elyse or Elise???  Lets make up our minds.  I have yet to see a designer or movie influence for this one.  I guess you could say that the hairstyle is reminiscent of The Coneheads.  Seriously!!  This is the mother of all bitch bumps for Integrity Toy’s hairstyles.  Not sure how to tone it down even a little.  I think I may have to just take this one down.  I’m all for a great updo but come on people.  This went past “updo” and went straight to hydrocephalic.  On the positive, I like the pockets on this gown.   This is also my favorite face mold and my number was called.  Had to buy her.

A workshop doll?!!!!  Are you kidding me?!!!  This could have easily been a convention exclusive doll and it would have sold out the first day.  She is Edgy enough for Nu.Face and classy enough for F.R.  Complete package head to toe and the fact that she is one of the twins didn’t hurt either.  Super glad I decided to purchase the doll for this one.  Nice work Integrity!

LOTS of platinum hair going on for this convention.  He is super cute though and love the white leather bomber jacket.

WClub Luncheon and Welcome Cocktail Party Dolls:

Last but not least…the WClub luncheon doll.  This was a doll that you purchased with the price of your lunch.  The ticket for lunch cost $125.00 therefore, I take exception to the description “giveaway souvenir”.  Souvenir certainly…giveaway…not even close.  And lest my grasp of the English language is not as secure as I thought it was, I consulted Webster on this one too.

a thing that is given free, especially for promotional purposes:

Again I state…giveaway???  not even close.

So…what do I think of our “souvenir”?  First of all I also take exception to the description “dressed doll”.  She is an Eden so I am inclined to love her.  My first thought when I saw her though was…AND?  As in, And…where are her clothes?  It isn’t as if I don’t have a gazillion things to put her in but still, a little wrap dress?, swim suit cover up?, sarong?…hell, I would have settled for a Bjork like swan dress….SOMETHING ( and it would have satisfied the whole cinematic theme as she work that to the Oscars LOL).  I am not upset by her per se…just thinking a better descriptor would have been “lingerie doll”.

As an addendum to this this years convention exclusives, attendees had the option of also purchasing a special “early bird” cocktail party ticket. The ticket included a doll.   There were two versions available and you had to sign up ahead of time for the version you wanted.  Of course, as with all things, one version was WAY more popular than the other and she became the hot ticket of the convention.

Integrity Toys 2015 Convention “Cinematic” Part 1- The Convention Collection

I was thrilled to attend this years Integrity Toys convention.  It was held in Long Beach, CA  and the hotel was situated directly across from the water overlooking the Queen Mary.  There were many, many fun places to eat and shop and a bonus for me was the opportunity to be treated and taken to a lovely brunch on the Queen Mary by  some amazing and generous friends.  { Hugs to Jim and Brian! }

This years convention was not marked with the drama of “delayed in customs” containers.  The convention collection was a mixture of old and new Hollywood glamour that held mostly true to the “Cinematic” theme.

Amazing right?!!  In hindsight, and in my humble opinion, this should have been the convention doll.  You will understand this more when you see photos of the actual convention doll.  It was a giftset, it was Agnes, and it was an anniversary year for Integrity Toys ( 20 years in business).  This would have been a convention doll worthy of the theme and company that produced it.  Again…just my opinion.

Star power indeed!!  The inspiration for this one is none other than Marilyn Monroe from “Gentleman Prefer Blondes”.

Not sure who the inspiration was for this one.  I have seriously OD’d on ladies in black gowns from Integrity Toys so I gave this one a pass.

Not sure if there is a movie tie in to this one…perhaps Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct?  That was my first thought when seeing her but who knows.  The accessories are glorious and the sleek short hair works on this Giselle.  Nice to see Nu Face making an appearance too.

Cinematic?  Yep, I wasn’t seeing the tie-in either.  The dress was very cute though and this Erin’s face is beautiful.  The accessories had me thinking about purchasing but in the end…she was a pass.

Will go into Convention exclusives in next post……

Articulated Silkstones!

The speculation has finally ended for many collectors and has become fact.  Mattel has formally announced ,beginning with the 2016 BFMC collection, Silkstone Barbie’s will be on articulated bodies.  According to the new BC holiday catalogue, there will be articulation at knees, wrists, elbows and torso.

Articulated Silkie

There is no information about what material is being used for these bodies.  I am hoping that the quality will still be there for these bodies.  I am all for articulation…as long as it is done correctly.  I am excited for this new phase in Silkstone collecting.  I am also hopeful that they will make bodies available so that collectors can re-body some of the older dolls.  I am also wondering if the hands will be removable like the Integrity Toys dolls.  This makes it very easy to redress.  We will just have to wait and see.

I don’t know about you guys but I am loving the chic modern look of this new line for 2016.  The black purse alone in the picture above is making me excited to see our first sneak peeks of the 2016 lineup.  I am also loving the cateye  liner of Miss Silkie.  Looking forward to new reveals Mr. Best!

Also interesting to note…there is a new video available to BFC members where Robert Best talks about the 2015 collection.  In that video both the photographer and the set builder for BFMC make very pointed comments about the gilt chairs.  Something to the effect that “you can never have enough gilt chairs”.  Is this a clue?!!  Will we finally, after years of begging, be able to buy these chairs?!!  Or…will they be a gift when signing up for the BFC next year.  If I were putting things on my Christmas list, that would be at the very, very top.

  Dear Santa,

I have been good.  I would really, really like a pair of Barbie gilt chairs for Christmas.          Thank you

–Rebecca

Pre Convention Report Photo Shoot

I am the worst procrastinator…I really am.  I have been sitting down to do post convention reports for the past week and somehow…I just get going on another project.  I have no idea why I do this because the convention was AWESOME and all the reports will be fun.  All I know is that today…when I had every intention of sitting down to do the convention write-up, I decided to do a photo shoot.  Hopefully this posting will clear the logjam of post convention information gathering in my head and clear the way for future posts.

I recently took receipt of some amazing OOAK repaints by the amazing artist Jon Copeland (selojspa).  I loved the Mood Changer Poppy Parker set we received through the WClub but wanted to see what Jon could do with the brunette and lavender haired heads.  What I received blew my mind.  Here is Miss brunette mood changer Poppy Parker enhanced by Jon.
