Poppy Parker

Poppy Parker 2014 Reveal

The theme for this years very popular Poppy Parker line is “The Girl from I.N.T.E.G.R.I.T.Y.”  Poppy and her friends are spies for this collection.  The accessory of the collection is a gun.  Each doll comes with one.  Gun control issues aside for a moment, it is kind of a cute accessory for this theme…if one can call a gun “cute”.  There were some big surprises with the reveal this year.  The biggest one was the addition of the quick switch head feature in the Poppy Parker line.  This means Poppy’s head can be popped off ( yes…pun intended) and switched to another head.  In this case, it is the villain ( Loni Lawrence who is called Sebina in this collection) who can quickly disguise herself as Poppy…or evil Poppy as she is being called.  COOL!!!  Second surprise of the collection was the addition of two spy agent friends Penelope Chase (Collette face mold) and Kimiko Gunn(Ayumi face mold).  This is brilliant in my opinion.  It is a great way to bring back some favorite collector face molds in new and fresh ways.  The designers at I.T. never fail to impress me with their creativity in this.  Nice work David!

Wow!!  Poppy Parker in a cat suit with a gun holster.  Guess she is all grown up now.  I love the look of this one and I really like the black gloved hands she comes with.  Will most definitely be using those on other Poppy’s as well.  I adore my 60’s  Poppy “The Happpening” from last year so I am liking this cinnamon haired version.  Boots should have been just a touch taller…IMO.

I was on the fence about getting this Loni version because I adore the streak in her hair but then I.T. threw in the quick switch silver haired Poppy head ….Game Over…I’m buying.  Brilliant idea to try out the quick switch head model with this collection.  We needed an evil Poppy to go with this theme and it’s a perfect way to do it.  This is also a very satisfying way to honor Poppy’s 5th anniversary for collectors.  Thank you David and Integrity Toys!

Does this guy come off as looking like a ferret to you?  He does to me.  I guess it is appropriate for an evil spy.  I see this one and all I can hear in my head is the sprocket theme from SNL and the German accented phrase “ Would you like to pet my monkey?”  He is very cool and I love the Euro chic black leather jacket.  I can’t get past the ferret face though.

Does she carry the gun in her handbag?  Will it fit?  These are the insane questions that keep me up at night LOL!  Perhaps she can hide it under the shoulder bow.  Okay, okay…I digress.  I love the soft updo with this one.  The pink gown with black stitching and beading is beautifully feminine.  The jewelry is fabulous as well.  I am not feeling the “Mayhem” but I can definitely see this one going to the casino in search of the ferret faced Lex.

Arm candy indeed!!!  This one is worth it for the jacket alone.  I mean come on…the portrait just oooozes the phrase “Bond….James Bond”.  Don’t they make the perfect couple?!  He needed to have secret spy documents in the briefcase or at least a grenade or something right.  Does the watch cut through a door?  Probably.

There was also some information and a picture released about a Poppy Parker shoe pack coming in August/September.  It was listed as another IT direct release which most likely means….lottery.  Picture is available to WClub members on the Vimeo release of the Webinar.  Members should have received info with instructions on how to access it.

This was a really fun collection.  I am not a big fan of the 60’s fashions but I found myself ordering quite a few of these because they were just so dang fun and cute.  Excellent work David and I.T.

Information on the other two lines, Jem and Fashion Teen Poppy coming up later today.

Unexcused Absence…

I have been tardy from the blog and I admit it.  There are good reasons for it , I promise.  For the past three weeks, I have been busy prototyping some items that I am hoping to sell at Barbie convention and through the blog (Etsy shop still being set up) as well.   While I can’t show many of the items yet, they are all in stages of doneness in my laundry room…I offer up some sneak peeks at the end of this post.  In the meantime, I decided to put Miss Poppy in the window for a photoshoot inspired by the beautiful spring green color that is popping up(LOL! pun intended) all around the Pacific Northwest right now.  Spring has sprung in the garden…and in the studio as well.

Time for a Spring Fling…

I am using a slightly different lighting formula on this one.  I have been looking for a small spotlight that was inexpensive and easy to use.  I  found some really great mini spot lights with magnetic feet that snap right onto my photo tent…the problem was…they are LED lights and turn everything pretty much blue.  How do I get a LED light to look like a warm soft box light?  Easy…add a filter.

The only thing tinged blue on this shoot was la tour Eiffel behind Miss Poppy….and that was on purpose.

ITFDS is finally back online!!

Hello loyal readers.  First off..I have to say I am sorry.  I had every intention of posting every Friday but did not factor in how unreliable my Wi-Fi would be while traveling.  In retrospect, I should have hung my “Gone Fishing” sign up and left it at that.  Live, Learn.  Happily I was able to post travel photos to my Flickr while we traveled ( it was a slow and painful process though) so for those who followed along on that, I am happy you enjoyed them.  Thank you for all your comments!  They were much appreciated.

We had the most amazing time journeying through Europe and my mind is absolutely bursting with new diorama ideas.  I will be working on those in the coming months along with some new doll related business ventures ( more info to come….).  For now, I will post some of the photos I had lined up to share while I was traveling.

Christmas In July Take 1

Integrity Toys announced 4 new mini collections to it’s WClub members on Thursday and titled it “Christmas in July”.  A word to the wise…when you talk up an event and label it “Christmas”, you better be sure to deliver.  I’m not sure Integrity Toys hit their mark on that one.  I know I was expecting something in the Nu.Face lineup and possibly something from the Homme line as well. Integrity offered nothing from either line and that has left many die hard Fashion Royalty fans feeling like they got up Christmas morning  with high expectations only to receive Ralphie’s infamous pink bunny suit from “A Christmas Story”.  Not a good thing.

For collectors who love 16 inch Poppy, Poppy Parker , Jem and the Holograms and Victoire Roux, this was worth the time you took off work to incessantly check and recheck your emails.

First up was a new set of lovelies from the 16 inch Poppy Parker Fashion Teen line.  Per Alain Tremblay of Integrity Toys, each doll in this mini collection was inspired by a season.

I don’t collect the larger scale dolls simply because I barely have enough room for the 1/6 scale ladies as it is but  I am sorely tempted by these fabulous 16 inch Poppys.  Also, confirmed by Alain, Tulabelle’s and Poppy’s clothing is interchangeable.  In other words, they can wear each others clothing so lots and mix and match options for this larger scale offerings from Integrity.

If you are interested in purchasing any one of these beautiful ladies, go to an Integrity Toys Dealer.

Joyful to Love the One

Continuing on the Poppy Parker redressing theme, I decided to combine two new additions to the doll room today.  I deboxed the fabulous Joyful in Japan Poppy Parker that arrived last week and dressed her in the WClub exclusive “Love The One” Kyori outfit.  The pink of the little caplet matched her eye makeup and lip color.  I finished the outfit with a Bogue’s Vogue hat that incorporated all of the colors already going on in the scene.

The title of this post sounds like a new bistro sandwich LOL!  The earlier gowns of the BFMC Barbie line are the favorites of many.  This gown from a Barbie called “Provencale” with it’s delicate blue and white pattern was originally worn by a short haired redhead.

The Sweetness of Alice Blue

I am on a Poppy Parker high at the moment with the arrival of all of the International Fair Poppys.  I am also on a bit of a color kick and apparently it is specifically a blue color kick.  After spending an entire post on the color Tiffany Blue and it’s origin and meaning, I found myself wondering about the origin of “Alice Blue”.  That was the first thought I had when I saw this red haired beauty in her adorable skating outfit.  It brought to mind thoughts of Alice in Wonderland (as I recall, colorized illustrations typically had her in blue) or the shade of blue favored by the Queen Mother (a factoid I am particularly proud of knowing because it allowed me to win a point in trivial pursuit against my husband…something I NEVER get to do).  I digress.  Anywhoo… It got me to wondering where did this term of “Alice Blue” come from.  Here is the answer according to Wikipedia

“Alice blue is a pale tint of azure that was favored by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt and which sparked a fashion sensation in the United States.

The hit song "Alice Blue Gown", inspired by Longworth’s signature gown, premiered in Harry Tierney’s 1919 Broadway musical Irene. The musical was made into a film in 1940 starring Anna Neagle and Ray Milland.

The color is specified by the United States Navy for use in insignia and trim on vessels named for Theodore Roosevelt.[citation needed] "AliceBlue" is also one of the original 1987 X11 color names which became the basis for color description in web authoring. The name "Alice Blue" was trademarked in 2001 by a costume company called "Alice Blue Fancy Dress & Costume" in the U.K. but the livery color chosen by them was not the correct Alice Blue shade, but instead a rich royal blue.

This particular shade of blue is also referred as white-blue (or blue-white) and ice/icy blue, due to its very pale coloration.”  (source Wikipedia)

So Happy Together…

My next installment of Poppy Parker was done to the music of the Turtles

This was listed as one of the top 10 songs of 1965 so very appropriate for the 1965 International Fair Poppys.

Poppy is California Dreamin’

I know I have said this before, but I will reiterate.  I always listen to music while I shoot photos.  It’s just something I have always done with doll photos.  I have two musicians in the house so if I am not playing music, it’s being played somewhere around me.  While typing this blog post, my daughter is hard at work on a violin piece called Gavotte in D Major by Bach…but I digress.  While shooting this series of photos, it seems only right that I go to the time that David Buttry used as inspiration for this his International Fair Poppy series.  When it comes to late 60’s, there is one stand out favorite for me…California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the Papas, and that is where I went for some mood music for this next set of photos.

While looking at some inspirations photos for this shoot, I ran across this one from 1967.  The hair!!

She is Irresistible

It’s official… “Irresistible in India Poppy Parker” is indeed…irresistible.  Okay, so I freely admit to playing Desi Girl while opening this one up.  If you have not had the pleasure of hearing this Bollywood favorite, I recommend it( it’s at the bottom of this post).  I waited for the sun to rise this morning, then it was up to the doll room and out came the camera.  I did an entire series on this fabulous new Poppy with a nod to the time Mr Buttry has given us as his inspiration…1965.  I will be posting a new set of photos every day for the next couple of days.

Her intricate hair style is sooooo late 1960’s.  Absolutely fabulous!!

Tiffany Blue

“Tiffany Blue is the colloquial name for the light medium robin egg blue color associated with Tiffany & Co., the New York City jewelry company. The color was used on the cover of Tiffany’s Blue Book, first published in 1845.[1] Since then Tiffany & Co. has used the color extensively on promotional materials, including boxes and bags.

The Tiffany Blue color is protected as a color trademark by Tiffany & Co. in some jurisdictions including the U.S.[2][3]

The color is produced as a private custom color by Pantone, with PMS number 1837, the number deriving from the year of Tiffany’s foundation. As a trademarked color, it is not publicly available and is not printed in the Pantone Matching System swatch books.”  (source:  Wikipedia)

Just say the name “Tiffany Blue” and instantly people know exactly what color you are talking about.  When I think of this color, I have an almost visceral response.  It has come to mean not just “Oh I’m getting something really special if it’s in a box like that” but indicative of the upper echelon of beauty, style and elegance.  If something is presented in that color, I’m going to spend time looking at it.  It’s the  reason why I stand transfixed when a Korean Air commercial comes on….it uses that color.   Only one other color approaches this kind of power in my life…Barbie pink of course.  So, it can come as no surprise that when Matisse had a dress of this color for sale, I went after it like a shark after a chum boat.

Miss “The Happening” Poppy Parker is wearing a Mattise outfit with matching hat and clutch.  Shoes are by Mattel.  The faux fur wrap is also by Mattise and Poppy’s pearl earrings were borrowed from a sister Poppy whose name escapes me at this time.

I was all set to type this blog post up and call it a day…and then the sun came out in the doll room…and I had to take some more shots.  I also think its important to note the difference between studio lighting and actual daylight.  while I strive to be as color accurate as I can when I photograph things in the tabletop studio, invariably there will be color variation.  Both settings also have a different and distinct feeling.  Most of what I do, is in the studio.  I like the look and feel of it.  I am branching out to more natural light shoots but I only anticipate being able to do that in the summer months. I have noticed that outdoor shots of dolls is  enjoying a renaissance on the doll boards.  It is really beautiful and inspiring to see.20130618-IMG_1195-Editwmsized

Take Me To The Fair

This past week marked the arrival of the 2013 WClub upgrade dolls.  Since the Poppy Parker “To the Fair” promotional shots were shown, anticipation for this one has been high.  The promotional shots did not exaggerate David Buttry’s fabulous work…this one’s a stunner.  Here is what we were expecting.

Derby Days

Today is the Kentucky Derby(a big horse race in the US).   I don’t really follow horse racing even though I live in the middle of the Pacific Northwest’s horse country.  I do, however, follow this event….for the hats.  It is one of the few events that American’s will break out the fancy millinery.  I always admire the European fashion sense and flair for wearing hats.  In the States, we just don’t wear hats like woman do in Europe.  I am constantly lamenting with a Monty Python line “ People just don’t wear enough hats these days.”  So…it was a complete pleasure to receive a fellow bloggers post in which she pointed her readers to the most amazing website for custom hats http://bvisayc556.wordpress.com/2013/05/03/hat-love/.  I was immediately inspired.  I had a few completely uninspired Barbie beach hats lying around so I decided to try my hand at “enhancing” them and am happy with how they turned out.

Given that the Kentucky Derby will be run today, I decided to show off the new hats on some girls I imagined were on there way to the race.  Hope you enjoy.

Poppy in the Conservatory

…with Professor Plum and a candlestick {Snort!}.  No, we are not playing the game Clue…but it sure sounds like it.  Some times I have an idea for a photo and it simply won’t go away.  I received a couple new pieces of furniture this past week and I knew I was in trouble when I formulated a game plan before I went to bed and woke up with new ideas on how to make the scene work.  I realized…I was already on the road to doing the diorama so I might as well get on with it.  My enthusiasm ( cough, cough obsession) was fueled even further by some amazing photos on Flickr  by Stilleto Queen (http://www.flickr.com/photos/stilettoqueen/).  This one was an idea that needed some lead time for construction so that explains my blog absence for the past week.  I was very lucky to find some resources online for this shoot and I will share them at the end of this post.  If you wish to make some of the items in this post, get ready to make glue, glue dots and scissors your best friends.

Do you like the French flower pails and tin pitchers?  Well they are made of paper and available for download at:

http://miniatures.about.com/od/dollhouseprintables/ss/flowercontainers.htm

Actual downloads are on page two of article above and in multiple scales.  These are all in 1/6 scale.  I used heavier weight presentation paper for this project because cardstock was just too heavy and hard to work with.  I also wanted a slight shine to the items but not glossy so the presentation paper worked well.  Tip:  to keep the flower pails from tipping over when you put something in them, fill them up halfway with rice.  It weighs it down and helps hold the stems in place . Tip:  Ever filled a mini pot and wondered what to use for dirt?  Try coffee grounds.

Happy mini gardening!!

Poppy Parker At The 1965 International Fair!

This past Saturday marked another goodie filled webinar from the talented folks at Integrity Toys.  At this event,  David Buttry unveiled a 5 doll Poppy Parker collection that evoked a “Dolls of the World” feel.  While I am not necessarily a dolls of the world collector in Barbieland…in Poppyland, stamp my passport and call me a happy camper.  You will see why. Smile

Holy Sonja Henie Batman!!  She has flippin’ ice skates??!!  I think this was the first words that flew out of my mouth when I saw her photo…” Look at the ice skates!!”.  I ADORE THEM!   She has the Japan skin tone and shares, according to Mr. Buttry, the facial screening of Photo Fab.  The fact that she is a redhead and all the exquisite details on this one ( flippin’ pom poms on the hat I tell you…pom poms!!) Sweet in Switzerland will be sweeter in the doll room come June.

Somebody bring me a Mai Tai!!  I have to say I am absolutely thrilled with this one.  My family and I vacation in Hawaii every other year and Miss Poppy looks like she would be right at home on the beaches of Kauai…right down to the flower in her ear which is appropriately placed over her right ear to signify she is single.  The sarong is removable to show a fun one piece underneath.  Lots of pieces to mix and match on this one.  The beaded necklace is, according to the webinar, one of the most intricate they have done.  Poppy is sporting original Poppy Parker facial screening here with applied lashes.  She has sweet and sultry brown eyes that have not been done before according to Mr. Buttry.  She has the same skin tone as Hot Dots…so a bit of a tan…as one would expect in the tropics.

Traveling west across the international date line, we end our international Poppy journey in…Japan.

Wowzers!  The facial screening on this lovely lady is new for this year just like Miss Spain.  She has..of course..the Japan skin tone and a stunning pair of violet eyes.  Joyful in Japan..not as joyful as I will be when June gets here and all these Poppy’s arrive.  It will be Christmas in June for sure inside the fashion doll studio.

As a whole, I have to say I am very happy with this Poppy offering from Mr. Buttry and Integrity.  I am most happy with the low price point on these beauties and the higher edition size that will hopefully allow most if not all who want these a chance at them.  Given that, if you are interested in any of these, you should contact a dealer ASAP.  The supply of these dolls will not last long.

**I was just informed by my fabulous dealer Barb that she has some Joyful in Japan left so feel free to contact her through http://www.windycitydolls.com/**

and she is nobody’s baby anymore.  She is a much more sophisticated version.  She has, after all, been modeling in New York now for the past couple of years so one would expect a certain increase in maturity and sophistication.  The little dog she comes with is TO DIE FOR and her name is “Petunia”.    With rooted lashes and eyes reminiscent of the uber popular Bergdorf Goodman Poppy, this one is another winner.  Sign me up for sophistication Poppy!

This one is a WClub exclusive folks so you have to be a member to get your hands on this pretty lady or be willing to pay the exorbitant fee she is sure to garner on Evilbay.

According to the story card by Integrity, Poppy’s parents gifted little Petunia to her to help keep her company while she works in New York.  You know…so she would not get so homesick.  I don’t know about you guys but….Poppy doesn’t look like she is suffering from being homesick.  She is an adorable young woman modeling in New York City.  I don’t think she is missing home at all Smile
