Fashion Inspiration
Happy New Year everyone! I hope this year will be full of new and interesting fashion doll news that we can talk about and share here. Fashion Inspiration is always a fun thing to speculate on when a new set of dolls is released from Mattel or Integrity Toys. There are some very good fashion sleuths in our collecting community that post possible inspirations for these new and old fashion dolls. I don’t know if it is the history lover or the fashion lover in me that enjoys this information. I guess it doesn’t really matter..I just think it is fun to see the possible inspiration that designers at Mattel or IT use to design a particular doll.
My friend Hilda of Bellissima Couture found a fashion and posted it on Pinterest the other day. It was a dress by Jason Wu and I instantly recognized it. It was a gown I had seen on a Fashion Royalty doll. It was not surprising…given that Jason Wu designed the doll for Integrity Toys.
Typically, a doll is released and I love to look back in history at fashion shows of popular designers to see if I can spot an inspiration. It started me thinking…Jason Wu started as a doll designer…was there inspiration coming the other way? In other words, could we look back at previous doll designs and see inspiration for the amazing designer he was to become. I think I may have found a few.
Whichever way inspiration goes, from the fashion world to the doll design arena or vice versa, that connection with fashion past and present is a big part of collecting for me. It is so interesting to me to see how they influence each other.
I am looking forward to another year of fashion inspiration and doll collecting. I hope you are too
‘Out Sass’ Inspiration?
Ever since this doll’s photos were released, a little birdie has been sitting on my shoulder saying “You have seen that jacket before.” I decided to go and check my file of favorite fashions I keep from the previous seasons fashion shows and “Eureka!”
I loved this suit when I saw it..hence the saved link to the picture…and I am happy to see it as an inspiration for a 1/6 design by the talented folks at Integrity.

Tropicalia…The Inspiration
Every year after convention, there are a few of us ( myself included) who rouse ourselves from the post convention doll hangover and ask the question “ I wonder what fashions inspired this years collection?”. If you have asked yourself this question, you are in luck. I was strolling through Flickr the other day and happened upon a fashion super sleuth. Their Flickr ID is JL998 and they have graciously given me permission to republish their photos here. Thank you JL998!! ** for more information on how to see more of their photos see below in this post**
It would appear that this years Tropicalia convention Imogen gift set was inspired by Anthony Vaccarello’s 2012 Spring RTW show.
And Collette and Erin from the convention collection appear to have been inspired by Mr. Vacarello’s designs as well
It would also appear, according to JL988’s super detective work, that Prada’s 2012 Spring RTW line was another big influence in this years convention collection.
I need to spend more time figuring out how to turn my swimsuits into ball gowns
It also occurs to me that I need to be paying more attention to this years just finished Spring RTW fashion shows! Perhaps the seeds of next years convention inspiration have already been sewn( pun intended). For more photos of JL889’s super fashion sleuthing visit their flickr at

Integrity Toys 2012 Reveal….the aftermath
Well, a week has gone by and those in the Fashion Royalty collecting world are still absorbing the massive amount of new eye candy that was displayed at the Integrity Toys webinar. I think it is safe to say that Integrity blew many collectors socks off with their new offerings for 2012. Evidence of that is clear…dealers have sold out preorders on many products already. Another factor in the early sold out status this year were lower edition sizes and smaller allotments to a growing number of dealers. This resulted in many collectors being told “ sorry, we are sold out of the doll you ordered.” Very frustrating! I would imagine it is a tough road to walk for Integrity and its dealers. A business would want to keep edition sizes low to decrease excessive inventory for their dealers while helping to maintain value for their customers. It’s that low supply/ high demand economics 101 again. A business also has to satisfy its customer and it would appear that many of Integrity’s loyal customers were left wanting in this last round of preorders. Finding the right edition size is not an exact science and I do believe there is something to be said for leaving your customers always wanting for more….but you don’t want to starve them right? I just can’t help but wonder if perhaps they guessed a little low with their numbers this time around. I managed to procure everything that I wanted through my amazing dealer ( Love ya Barb!)…but I really feel for those who were not able to get what they wanted and I feel for the dealers who had to disappoint many of their loyal customers because they simply did not have the allotments to satisfy demand. Where is the happy medium??
Yes Integrity…you have that good of a collection for 2012….hope you have not lost some collectors with the stingy edition sizes this year.
Here were my favorites for this latest 2012 reveal.
I am not saying I ordered all of these….but I’m not saying I didn’t either
The Kyori gift set was the definite winner if current doll board feedback and the speed with which it sold out is any indication.
Some other early preorder sellouts were the Nu.Face Lillith and Eden gift set and Giselle, Fashion Royalty’s Adele and FR2’s Tatyana. The Mod Poppy Parker line sold out on preorders in …I swear….nano seconds.
After a new collection comes out, I always find it fascinating to research and see comments from others on fashions that may have inspired the collection designs. Obviously Jason Wu’s designs will be an inspiration but I am pleased to see that other designers works are favored as well. I wish I could take credit for the sleuthing on these and finding all of them but I cannot. I found a number of these from the very observant and talented members of the WClub forum.
First up is Kyori pictured above….it looks like the skirt portion of her evening gown was inspired by Zac Posen’s Spring 2012 RTW
Another of Zac Posen’s designs may have inspired FR2’s Ayumi as well…
The collection Adele may have gotten inspiration from Alexander McQueen Spring 2012 RTW
Adele’s accessories were definitely inspired….
by McQueen 2012 Spring RTW and Louis Vuitton Spring 2012
Lilith and Eden Giftset clearly took some direction from Gucci’s 2012 Spring RTW
Dania looks to have been inspired by Integrity’s design captain Jason Wu – Spring 2012 RTW
