ITFDS Musings from the Golden Globe Red Carpet
The Golden Globes were last night and It was fun watching the red carpet with my daughter. She and I have differing opinions on what is good fashion. I love classic styling and ball gown princess couture. My daughter goes for the darker colors and edgier designers. I have to say that my first positive impression from the red carpet had nothing to do with the fashion. Did you guys get a look at the coolest heat lamps ever??!! They looked like big white floor lamps. The wedding planners of the world, I suspect, are clogging up the phone lines this morning trying to line these babies up for the next year of events.
Fashion wise, there was much to admire on the red carpet for both my daughter and I. There were also a few laugh out loud scratch my head and yell “ Oh my word….NO!” moments. With so much going on, I decided to group my reactions into different categories like the awards ceremony itself.
Category 1: Best actress in a fashion ensemble. The queen of the ball. Ms. Anne Hathaway in Chanel. Nice to see Chanel redeeming itself after Elle Fanning’s shower mishap at the Critics Choice awards. This lady gets more stunning with every award show this year. It’s hard to believe she could outdo this number for the Oscars….we shall see. The big rumor at last nights festivities was that Ms. Hathaway is expecting too. The actress and her team have completely denied it.
** All photos are property of MSN’s Wonderwall**
Category 2: Best supporting actress in a fashion ensemble. The princesses of the court…. Woman who looked so good it was sickening…in a good I just ate too many chocolates way .
Okay…so Julianne Hough rocked the red carpet….AGAIN!! Somebody get me her stylist’s number. Taylor Swift consistently pulls off stunning red carpet looks. The back of her Donna Karan number was just as fabulous as the front. Well done stylist. Amy Adam frothed her way down the carpet in this dreamy ballet pink Marchessa creation and Zooey Deshanel is beyond cute in anything she wears. Oh and I have to throw in an honorable mention in here..
Rosario Dawson in Antonio Berardi did not fit with the princess of the court theme but I loved her in this
Category 3: Best actress who just had babies… and had no business looking this good on the red carpet!
This is soooooo not right. {{Rebecca sits in a corner and sulks. She decides to make plans to hit the gym ASAP }}. Seriously though folks…they JUST had babies.
Category 3.5 Cutest pregnant woman on the carpet…..Kristin Bell in Jenny Peckham
Awwwwww! Dax Shepard and Kristin Bell….that’s so sweet..I think I just got a cavity.
Category 4: Best actress portraying a siren on the red carpet.
Katharine McPhee in Theyskins’ Theory ( yep..had to look that one up too). Hey…if I had a body like this I would be wearing half a dress and showing it off too.
Selma Hyak in Gucci. Look in the dictionary under “va va voom” and you will find a picture of this woman.
Halle Berry in Versace. Holy cow!! Does this woman ever age??!! In the genetic pool there are winners and then there are LOTTO winners. I believe this woman was the single winner of the largest gene pool Powerball. I adore her in this Versace…and every red blooded heterosexual male in the room just stood up and said “AMEN”
Naomi Watts in Zac Posen. Okay…I am going to come right out and say it…Naomi Watts is a GODDESS in this gown. From top to toe…PERFECTION!
Category 6: Most confusing performance by a stylist.
One of these things is not like the other..one of these things just doesn’t belong ( Do we all remember this from Sesame Street??…sing it with me now…)
Helena Bonham Carter in Dolce and Gabbana. Would someone please, please, please tell Helena to brush her hair. Oh and what can I say about the lips purse???? Well try this “Shun, to push away…to say “no thank you”. That purse is indeed the final kiss of death for this entire look. Love this woman’s work as an actress. She is brilliant. This outfit…is not. To Helena and her stylist…please pack your knives and go.
Sienna Millier in custom Erdem. Custom meaning it is OOAK…meaning it won’t be repeated…THANK GOD!! What is this love affair going on with applique flowers?? I don’t think Martha would label this a “Good Thing”.
Alyssa Milano in….an orange mumu. I don’t even know where to start. The color is not flattering on her and the cut is REALLY not flattering on her ( note to self ladies…an empire waist does not solve everything). The accessories are too heavy in my opinion. In the words of an epic line from the movie Aliens….”Game over man…game over.”
Lena Dunham in Zac Posen. I don’t know much about Ms. Dunham or the show “Girls” that won last night . She seems like a very talented young woman. I think she is adorable. I think the dress is to die for. The two just don’t seem to go together. Maybe it was the impressive set of tats this actress displayed in this couture gown that turned me off. Don’t get me wrong. I have no problem with tattoos. I have a question though. Can anyone seriously pull off a couture ball gown with a full upper back tattoo? Okay…Angelina Jolie can but I don’t believe Lena Dunham has done it. The color is not flattering on her either. Unlike poor unfortunate Alyssa above, the cut of this gown does work on Ms. Dunham and love her short pixie hair. I felt sorry for the girl though. This gown should have come with an assistant to help get her up on the stage. It looked like a battle to wrestle this big dress up to the podium…and she had to do it….twice.
Thanks for all the time you put into this. I missed the red carpet part so I really loved it!

Hi Rebecca! love your blog post…and some of these gowns are lovely. The women who just had children really carried their kids in designer shopping bags- I love Clare Danes’ red gown! wowza. It is disappointing about Melissa Milano- I love her as an actress, and she has such a cute figure- that ghastly orange gown does not do her justice!
I agree with the tattoo thing there- go total goth or couture, somehow the two are odd together, though that gown did compliment the actess, I liked it especially the flow and cut.
thank you for doing these blog posts like this! Alot of fun to read!

Helen Mirren, Kate Hudson, Naomi Watts: stunning, classy, breathtaking! Nicole Kidman: always stylish yet cutting edge (loved the back too). JLo: predictable. Jessica Alba great in salmon. Amanda S: wrong. Anne Hathaway: agreed. I think Chanel would regard her as a great muse, as she did Suzy Parker.
Frenchy Marion C: NO, why do women w/knockout figures wear loose clothing? Save that for your fat days. Sally Field: not quite there, the front screamed for more shaping, didn’t look like it fit her or displayed her figure well. Mayim Bialik: are you serious? That dress was perfect for an outta shape 60 yr old or maybe Helen Mirren in 20 yrs.
Hate the sheer floor length panels over shorter skirts. None of them worked. I could write more, but you covered it with much more humor!
As for Helena, I LOVE her Salvador Dali-pop art inspired red lipstick purse! A great splash of color and irreverence. Her uncombed hair has to match her hubby’s coif. Their signature accessories: sunglasses. Helena does it her own way, hiding her face, figure and thick dark hair. That’s always her statement. Remember her in her early Merchant-Ivory films? Such a lovely woman, but on the red carpet, anti-fashion.
LOVE your write up. I didn’t see this live, just online photos from a few sources.
I want a REALLY clean shot of Naomi … that dress, her hair, the way she carries herself … all deserve a good photo against the logo backdrop, not amongst the crowd. That color (the most perfect red I’ve ever seen on the red carpet), the cut, the fit, the long sweeping hemline and that shoulder train … I’m not a fashionista, just a fan of old movies, so I don’t know the terminology … but she was stunningly memorable.
Yes, lots of princess gowns. I admire them in this bitter cold weather, smiling as if it’s 80 degrees. Must have been those heat lamps!
How are some gonna top it for the Oscars? I kept thinking that … and that the Golden Globes recently became almost as important as the Oscars, at least for fashion.

Totally agree with disliking the sheer panel add-ons. It’s like they ran out of time and said ” Oh just slap some extra tulle on there and she will be fine.” May work for a high school prom but not for the Golden Globes. Yes, Helena does indeed march to the beat of her own drummer…and has the purse to prove it LOL! Hope my inspiration for fashion commenting doesn’t dry up before the Oscars. Looking forward to seeing what shows up on the red carpet there.

I had a great time reading your rewiew !! May I add some little things from my point of view….
Oh, Anne HAthaway, such a beautiful woman ! She is like a modern Audrey Hepburn for me… If someone create a topic of Audrey’s life, Anne Hathatway ought to be the leading actress !
If I’m rather OK with you on all the reviews you made, I must confess that I realy do not love halle Berry’s… I do not love all those cut outs and the right breast looking so huge.. And I do not know why but the dress reminds me the infamous Gaga’s meat dress….. but , I can’t deny miss Berry is a breathtaking beauty !!!!
At the other end, there is Helena Bonham Carter… I know I know, she just looks too kirky , but this is her style, and as a former gothic myself, I can’t help myself loving this little old doll !! Plus I love this woman who is more brain than body, as a lot of us are in the real life…. But, of cource, I can understand that she realy looks strange amoung all those godesses !!!!
And , as a final… poor Alysa Milano, I loved her so much when she was a young and even very yound actress… she seems to have lost all her brighness, even if the dress is blindening !!!! I’m sure she will be better next year……..
Thank you for all those pictures and all the comments !
I realy enjoyded !

Thank you so much for the feedback Isabelle. I am in complete agreement that Helena Bonham Carter is an amazing and brilliant actress. I admire her willingness to put herself out there and be consistent in her individuality. Just had to make comment on it and that purse 🙂 I see where you are coming from on Ms. Berry. I was paying homage to the fact that she is in the over 40 category and can wear something like this…amazing!
