The Doll Closet
The doll closet is always changing in the doll room. I am constantly on the lookout for new ways to store and organize doll clothing, props, furniture and all manner of items associated with this wonderful world of collecting. I have been working on a better way of storing doll clothing and I shared what I did a number of months ago. I continue to make improvements on the original idea so I thought I would share some updated pictures and show a little bit more of the Pandora’s Box that is the Doll Room Closet…..

The latest in organizing clothing on the back of the doors of the closet. Shorter dresses and suits are above and longer gowns are below. I am now using paper cardstock dress forms to hang the clothing on as it helps keep the clothing neat and the cardstock form is more compact than the plastic variety so I am able to store more clothing on each rod.
The rounds of clothing are great because you can just pick up the whole round and take it out to look for what you want. They take up a great deal of space however. The drawers are full of various items like, purses, furs, gloves, glasses ect…
The other half of the doll room closet! Clothing is now spilling over into the other door. It serves as storage for all the various supplies I use in set and diorama building and is a great place to store furniture pieces I use in my doll photography.
I store most of my doll jewelry in little baggies suspended from these clip it up hooks so I can see everything that I have to choose from quickly. Sometimes I only have a short amount of time to do a photo shoot so I find having everything easily accessible makes it easier to do things and more likely that I will actually get the photo shoot done.
As I have said before, I love to see other people’s ‘behind the scenes’ photos so I hope these help give some ideas on how I store things and organize them.

I’ve been admiring your collection and photo’s for some time. Your doll room is spectacular.
I’ve been trying to figure out a better way to organize my jewelry so that I could see it. Right now I have it in pill organizers. Each one has 28 compartments and very compact(which is good cause I have too many) but you really can’t see what you have. I have been thinking about taking pics of the jewelry and putting the pics in an album and numbering the pics/compartments. That way I could just browse the album instead of pulling out all the jewelry … someday I’ll get around to it 🙂

Thank you so much for the comment Rhonda! I am glad you are enjoying the photos of the collection. I started out storing my doll jewelry the same way…in the pill containers and like you, would lose things in those deep bins. I lilke your album idea. I have a long list of “someday” items too .

This is fantastic!!! Very inspiring. I just recently reorganized my clothing. It doesn’t look this great, but is has cut down on my frustration of trying to find different clothing and accessories. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much Vanessa! Let’s face it…this closet only looks good on the day I take pictures. All other days there are things thrown in there, dolls sitting on random chairs, drawers open and stuff hanging out of it because I couldnt’ be bothered to put it away nicely. 😉 It is great to have everything visable and easily accesible isn’t it? I find I am able to get so much more done when I know I can find the thing I am looking for. Of course…there are always things I put away and say to myself ” I need to remember where I put that so I don’t forget”. Yep…you guessed it…that item is sure to never be seen again until we move heehee.

I really need to get organized like that.
All my clothes are in plastic totes getting smooshed, ugh lol
Where would I find the paper cardstock dress forms? ty 🙂

I had all my clothes in plastic bags in a box and I could never find anything not to mention the “smooshing” thing. I am just using cardstock dressforms I made by tracing the Randall Craig dress form that comes with his outfits on plain white cardstock and cutting it out.

I love the cardstock idea but how are you attaching it to the door? Adding a hanger hook to the cardform or ??? My stuff is still packed in plactic bags in plastic storage drawers. Things do get smooshy but I try my best just to loosely fill. Problem is I have like 8 big drawers going now. Recently I’ve found that I own more than one of some fashions that I’d forgotten about owning at all !! Time to thin out or have a day of twin fashion play. (tee-hee) Love you pictures. I’ve been a silent fan for a very long time on the barbie board. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I did not see your comment and question until just now. Bad me. The clothing form is hung on a rod ( a small wooden dowel held up by adhesive hooks) with a clip product called Clip-It-Up. I used to have all my doll clothing in drawers and bins and found I had duplicate outfits too because I would always forget what I had. I like being able to see everything when I need to choose something quick for a photoshoot.

Hello from England,
I’ve just discovered your wonderful, fabulously organised Barbie closet and have a questions if you have the time.
The clothes seem to be attached by crocodile clips to hooks, but ‘m unsure what ‘card forms’ look like, could you explain please. I’ve tried something similar with plastic coat hangers but the clothes just fall off.

Hello Karen and welcome to the Barbie closet ;-). I always make time for talking Barbie and in particular…THE CLOSET. Yes, the clothing is attached to a card form which is simply a card dress form that I cut out of cardstock and hung with a “clip it up” clip. I am not even sure you can get the “clip it up” product any more but you can find these kind of clips at craft and hardware stores. If you email me at raberry65@msn.com I can send you a file with the dress forms on it so you can cut out your own. Hope this helps answer your questions.

Hi Lisa! The clothing comes from all over really. Many of the outfits I have are considered “OOAK” or one of a kind and were purchased through various artists who specialize in making clothing for this scale.
