NEWS FLASH: 2015 National Barbie Doll Collector Convention Doll

Last year at convention, we were told that Mattel would be taking over the design as well as manufacturing the convention dolls for all official conventions.  While I was sad that we would most likely not see the collaboration with OOAK artist that I so loved, I understood the business decision behind it.  Conventions are becoming a big deal now ,I believe, and the convention doll is one of the main perks of the entire convention.  There were rumors after the last U.S. Barbie convention that the dolls for all conventions (U.S., Japanese and European) would be the same but with perhaps some small variations.  The Japanese Barbie convention is this weekend.  I was excited to see the doll they were given as it might be an indicator of what we would be receiving this year at NBDCC.  This morning, the NBDCC committee released a photo of this years convention doll on FB.

To say I am surprised is an understatement.  I had not realized how much I enjoyed the anticipation and the final “reveal” as part of the convention experience.  While I understand the reasoning behind releasing the photo…these photos were going to be out there anyway as of the end of this weekend…I am not sure how to feel about having this information early.  It’s weird.

How do I feel about the doll?  She is a fabulous representation of theme I think.  I love the whole Marlene Dietrich vibe.

How do others feel about the release of this information so far in advance of the U.S. convention??

Sound off….

OHN That’s just wrong. That’s the whole purpose of Saturday evening.

    • Yeah…I kind of have the same feeling. However, if they are giving the same doll to all conventions, the surprise will only be for the first convention goers, which will always be Japan…in March. I always liked the big reveal on Saturday night too.

It does feel weird knowing the convention doll early – a bit of a let down as the anticipation is gone. I do like her, but wish I didn’t get to see her until the banquet.

That’s one of the best things about the final night of convention….the anticipation, and then finally everyone unveiling their dolls at the same time.

    • Yes, I think so too. I wonder how many people sitting at the table making this decision about same doll for all conventions considered this. I wonder if it came up at all.

  4. I’m not thrilled with any of it. I’m not really impressed with the doll to be honest. She looks like one of the $34.95 BFC collector dolls, she doesn’t look like something special for a convention. I was at least hoping it would be a Silkstone doll. Plus with no reveal there is really nothing special at all about it to me. Just my opinion, I hope everyone else loves her. I’m just glad that the convention doll is not the big draw for me to attend the convention and with this one it isn’t really even a perk to me at least.

I wasn’t happy about Mattels decision but kindof understand. I looked forward to the Saturday night “surprise” so this hurts that. I’m not sure how I feel about the doll itself.

    • Actually, since Rob sort of said my thoughts I will say it…doll is absolutely nothing special and I’m not happy at all about it! Lol

  7. Wow!! And as a dealer I get my hand slapped for posting a picture of a doll that is coming out next month and they have the nerve to post pictures of what is supposed to be a suprise. That’s one of the best parts of Saturday night!! I have to agree with Rob, not impressed with the doll at all. It’s sure nothing special and the fact that we know now what it is, it’s even less special. Another step backwards in my opinion.
